According to a new study, kids who were exposed to higher amounts of alcohol in the womb may have difficulty in reading, learning, reasoning and thinking, leading to problems with social skills and behavior.
The study looked at emotional and social behavior among 33 school age kids with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).
Developmental effects can be seen in kids with prenatal alcohol exposure, known as FASD and the severe manifestation of FASD is fetal alcohol syndrome.
Symptoms seen in kids with fetal alcohol syndrome are facial deformity, stunted growth and serious nervous system and behavioral problems.
In the current study, researchers found that children with FASD had more trouble with processing their own emotions, as well as reading emotional and social cues from others.
That was compared with 34 healthy children, as well as 30 with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a condition with which many children with FASD are mistakenly diagnosed.
