Having an abortion is an important decision that women shouldn’t be rushed to take. When the woman in question is sure that she wants to go through with it she might be interested in different types of abortion that she could have.
Early medical abortion as one of the kinds of abortion
This type of abortion can be performed in the first 9 weeks of pregnancy. The main point is for women to take two medications 48 hours apart. The effect of the medications is something like a natural miscarriage during the early stages of pregnancy.
If you choose this abortion kind after the initial visit you will need two additional appointments. During the first one you will receive mifepristone that blocks the hormones that prepare the lining of the uterus for the pregnancy. After this you can go home.
During the second appointment for this method of abortion you will have to take a second pill called prostaglandin that will break down the lining of the uterus. This will be cleared from the uterus along with the embryo through the vagina.
This is another one of the abortion methods. Just as the name suggests, the method uses gentle suction to remove the baby from the uterus. The procedure usually lasts for 5-10 minutes and the patients receive local anesthetic. For the procedure the doctors need to dilate the entrance of the womb.
In order to make the procedure of abortion easier, most probably you will have a tablet placed into the cervix a couple of hours before the procedure. Then the doctor inserts a plastic tube connected to a pump to remove the baby and the surrounding tissue.
Late medical abortion procedure
As it has been mentioned before, prostaglandin and mifepristone can be used to terminate a pregnancy. These can also be used at the later stages. In this case the entire procedure lasts longer and women have to take higher doses of prostaglandin. The abortion is something like a natural miscarriage. Usually women can go home after the procedure, but it is possible that they will have to spend the night at the hospital.
Dilation and evacuation
This abortion process is performed while the patient is under general anesthesia. Using a forceps the doctor gently stretches the cervix to be able to remove the fetus. The process takes about 10-20 minutes and if you are healthy most probably there will be no complications. After the procedure you could experience some bleeding for a couple of weeks.
If you want to have a process of abortion you have two main options: two-stage abortion and the medically induced abortion. After the procedures it is possible that you will have fever, experience bleeding or pain. If this is the case, you should seek immediate medical attention.
There are several different abortion types. The type that you should have mainly depends on the gestational age of the baby and also on your overall health and personal preferences.
