Pregnancy is a big, busy time for most parents, especially expectant new mums. There’s lots of planning to do, from the birthing classes to the nursery and, of course, the birth itself.
There’s so much going on that it can sometimes be easy to forget about yourself and your own needs, including that of your maternity wear – meaning that a few last-minute purchases as your bump grows can result in some unusual fashion choices!
Your body will change a lot during pregnancy, as you’ve no doubt been told a hundred times already. For the fashion lover though, this should be taken as a chance to be creative, and take on the challenge of dressing for a different body – this was the attitude of blogger Nandini D’Souza writing for Elle magazine, who said she found it a “welcome distraction” from the less enjoyable parts of her pregnancy.
While pronounced curves and a need for flexibility certainly put you outside your fashion comfort zone, it’s still possible to stay on-trend without squeezing your way into the latest size-zero pieces. These are some of the top things to look out for:
A comfortable tunic might not sound glamorous, but pick one or two in the season’s hottest colours and pair with leggings for an outfit that is flexible and current. For a dressy look replace the leggings with skinny leather trousers featuring a hidden elasticated waistband!
Prints and Florals
A floral design is smart and attractive, accentuating your new shape and emphasising your curves in the right places. Go for a floral dress belted above your bump, with leggings and a pair of soft boots to finish off the outfit.
Don’t dress as if your bump isn’t there – you’ll be uncomfortable and your clothes will appear too tight. Light dresses and layers are the way to go to keep you cool without restricting movement.
Look out for clothes that can be used after pregnancy for nursing, as there are some really innovative designs out there – French designers Vertbaudet offer a great range of maternity clothes with adjustable features, while baby company Chewbeads produce a beautifully stylish necklace that doubles up as a teething device, perfect for when little ones start to grab!
