8 Things Never to Say to a Pregnant Woman

Pregnant women have enough to deal with, without having to deal with over familiar and insensitive comments from people they know as well as perfect strangers.

There is the morning sickness, the constipation, swollen ankles and not being able to see those feet to contend with. Pregnant women shouldn’t also have to deal with pregnancy comments such as:

1. Is that twins in there? Are you sure?

That can be particularly offensive for a woman to hear when she is only 6 months along, especially if she herself is self-conscious about how big she looks even before the final trimester of her pregnancy. If you make the mistake of asking about twins, do not under any circumstances follow it up with an “are you sure?” Of course she is sure, we live in the age of ultrasound, you know!

Pregnant Woman2. You’ve exploded!

Pregnant women are supposed to get big, and they don’t need anyone to tell them that! Refrain from all comments about “you must be due at any moment” or “you look just about ready to pop”.

3. OMG! Look at your ankles!

Pointing to an obvious pregnancy discomfort really doesn’t help. And if you’re referring to a poor pregnant woman’s uncomfortably swollen ankles, well it is quite possible that she cannot even see them herself right at that time!

4. Wow! You’re going to eat all that!

Pregnant women do have their cravings and they are supposed to eat a little more than they would otherwise. But this is no reason to make them feel conscious about it!

5. You don’t even look pregnant!

You may even mean it as a compliment, but it may not be received as one. A pregnant woman may well start to wonder if there is something wrong and if her baby isn’t growing as well as it should. Other pregnant women make take offence… so you think I look fat and not pregnant?

6. Can I touch your belly?

Do not ask to touch anyone’s belly unless you know them really well. Certainly not a stranger, or else be prepared for an understandably rude rebuff.

7. Are you going to breastfeed?

This is a personal choice, to say nothing of a rather controversial issue. So unless you want to rake up a hornet’s nest of an argument, steer clear of this one. It’s none of your business anyway!

8. Get all the sleep you can!

Pregnant women are probably stressed enough as it is, don’t remind them about the possibility that things are only going to get tougher from here on!
