Termination of Pregnancy: What Terminates Pregnancy?

Termination of pregnancy in simple terms is known as the discontinuation of pregnancy and it can take place in two basic ways. One way of termination of pregnancy is through induced abortion and the other way is through a miscarriage.

Even though these methods are different from one another, their final outcome is the same which is the death of the fetus. While on one hand, miscarriages occur naturally, abortion is induced deliberately, irrespective of complications or not. The following is some more information about termination of pregnancy.

Miscarriages are an involuntary form of termination of pregnancy which occurs on its own and spontaneously. Miscarriages occur before a fetus is fully developed and is capable of leading an independent life outside the womb. Miscarriages result in death of the fetus and can take place due to many reasons, a few of which are listed below.

  • If the expectant mother is suffering from any injuries or if there is a presence of any disorder in her, then this can lead to miscarriage. Thus if a pregnancy lady detects to have a critical disease or disorder, she must consult with her doctor immediately whether that can be a threat to the baby or not. If she is suffering from a condition that may pose any threat, then the doctor may suggest proper treatment for prevention of the disease to the baby.
  • Another common cause of a miscarriage is complication or hindrance in the development of the baby inside the womb of the mother. These complicationsgenerally arise within the first three months of pregnancy and may lead to a miscarriage.

Abortion

The second way of termination of pregnancy is through an abortion. Induced abortion is done in the case when the birth of the fetus is unwanted. There can be many different reasons for wanting an induced abortion and the following are a few of them.

  • If the pregnancy poses a risk to the health of the mother, then this may lead to an induced abortion. Often, females may be put to certain complications and serious health issues when they get pregnant and in such a situation, she and others in the family may decide to go for an abortion on the doctor’s advice. This is one of the most common reasons for induced abortion.
  • If the pregnancy poses a risk to the health of the fetus as well as the mother, then even in that case, an induced abortion is often done. If the baby is not safe inside the womb and the doctors say that it may not survive on birth, then this is also a situation of induced abortion. In many cases, fetuses with abnormalities may also be aborted.

It is a crime in most nations to abort a baby without any valid reason or just because it was unplanned and unwanted. But it has been seen that many women abort their babies around the world, irrespective of the fact that the abortion is permitted by law or not.
