Vaginal Smell During Pregnancy

There are a lot of changes that women have to face during pregnancy, including vaginal smell during pregnancy. This is caused by an increased amount of mucus and secretions from the cervix.

As a result, the vagina becomes dump. This combined with the changes of pH of the vaginal make this region perfect for the development of bacteria that are to blame for the odor. This is usually accompanied by itching and a cheesy vaginal discharge. All these symptoms indicate bacterial vaginosis or yeast infection.

Smell and bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis appears when the pH of the vagina is out of balance for one reason or the other. As a result women have a fishy vaginal odor while being pregnant. Although the situation is quite bothersome, there are some measures you could take to avoid it.

First of all you should wear only panties made of cotton that can absorb the discharge and so reduce the odor. In the same time it is best not to wear any tight clothes because these make the pelvic area sweat even more.

The damp and moist conditions are best for the spreading of bacteria. Another thing you could do is to wear panty liners to absorb the excess discharge and to minimize the smell. These need to be changed at regular intervals.

Alternative measures

If you would like to get rid of vaginal smell while being pregnant you should also try sleeping without underwear during the night. This way the vagina will be able to breathe.

When showering, you should avoid using soaps with chemicals in the genital area. It is enough to clean this area with plain water a couple of times per day. Drinking 2-3 liters of fluids per day can ensure that the infection won’t spread to the urinary tract as well, avoiding another infection.
