What Is the Relation Between Acne and Pregnancy?

The truth is that there are a lot of women who have to think about acne and pregnancy.

Acne and Pregnancy

Causes of acne during pregnancy

One of the main causes of acne is the hormone fluctuation that you experience during pregnancy. In this case progesterone makes the glands produce more secretions that lead to zits. In the same time the body retains more fluids. Some of these are toxic and this is why the zits appear.

What can you do about it?

If you are affected by acne when being pregnant you should talk to your doctor to find out what topical acne treatments can you use. It is possible that you can use products with azelaic acid (you need a prescription for this) or benzoyl peroxide.

It is also possible that if you have problems with acne while being pregnant you will be able to use creams with erythromycin or some other kind of antibiotics. You shouldn’t be using any products that weren’t approved by your doctor because you could end up hurting the baby.

Off-limits solutions

If we aren’t referring to pregnancy acne in some cases the problem is treated with strong-arm products, like Retin-A, Accutane, or other topical retinoids. These are all off-limits until you give birth and nurse because they can be absorbed by your skin and so they can reach the blood stream of the little one.

Also when thinking about pregnancy and acne, you have to avoid oral isotretinoin and tetracycline because they are known to lead to birth defects. In fact it is best to avoid all kinds of oral acne medications during pregnancy except for oral erythromycin.

There are two other common treatments for acne, salicylic acid and beta-hydroxy acid, but these weren’t studied regarding pregnant women’s acne and it is possible that they can be absorbed through the skin. There is a wide range of creams that contain these ingredients and you should avoid them.

The best thing you can do in case of the acne of pregnant women is to read the label of the products before you start using them. It is possible that you were using products of this kind before you found out that you were pregnant. There is no reason to be alarmed; you just have to stop using them.

Preventive steps

When it comes to maternity acne, you should think about preventing acne, and you can do this by taking good care of your skin. Wash your face with a mild cleanser twice a day. Rinse thoroughly especially around the jaw and the hairline.

If you are thinking about acne in pregnancy you should know that you aren’t the only one with this problem and that there is always something that you can do about it to make it better.
