Information about acne during pregnancy

The acne that you have during pregnancy isn’t that much different from regular acne. A lot of women are affected by it and in many cases it isn’t clear what makes acne worse during this period. It is believed that there is an overproduction of oil sebum that makes acne worse.

Pregnancy AcneIn the end it looks like acne during pregnancy is caused by an overproduction of hormones that in turn lead to overproduction of sebum.

Although the situation may seem quite desperate, the good news is that there is a lot you could do to be able to look in the mirror again.

What to do?

If you would like to get rid of pregnancy acne, the first step is to make sure that you wash your face twice a day. When washing you should be gentle with the skin and opt for a mild cleanser.

Avoid using hot water, instead go for lukewarm water because it doesn’t strip the skin from the natural oils.

Hair could also have a word to say when it comes to acne during pregnancy. If you have oily hair, you should wash it daily and make sure that it doesn’t get into your face. You should be careful with the acne sores. Try to avoid scratching, picking, squeezing or popping the sores.

If you do any of the above in case of pregnancy acne, you could spread the infection and you could end up with scars. When thinking about your makeup, make sure that the products that you use are oil-free.

These products should be water-based, nonacnegenic or noncomedogenic.

When it comes to habits, there are some you should avoid so that you won’t have problems with acne during pregnancy.

One of the habits that you should give up is resting your face in your hands. This is because the hands have sweat and oils and these could make the acne sores even worse.

Medication

Women usually think of medication only as a last result in case of pregnancy acne. This is because if they put something on their skin or they swallow something it could get into their bloodstream and it could reach the baby. This is why it is very important to be careful about the products that you use.

One of the medications that you could use for acne during pregnancy is Erythromycin. Another option may be Azelaic acid. Usually both of them are applied on the skin as gel or lotion and you need a prescription for them and they cannot be found as over the counter products.

Some people use benzoyl peroxide in case of pregnancy acne, but the opinions regarding its safety during pregnancy are mixed. The truth is that there was little research done regarding the effects of the medication on pregnant women, but, on the other hand, no negative effects have been reported.

There are some medications that could cause birth defects in case of acne during pregnancy and these should be avoided. Such medication includes isotretinoin and other kinds of retinoids along with doxycycline, inocycline and other types of tetracyclines.

If you have problems with pregnancy acne, the best thing you could do is to see your dermatologist about it or your health care provider to find a solution to the problem.
