A new study has indicated the sort of impact that sleep can have on a pregnant woman’s blood pressure – it isn’t just too little sleep, but also too much sleep can up high blood pressure risk among women who are in the last trimester of their pregnancy.
9 hours of sleep per day is considered normal for pregnant women since previous research has shown that women tend to need more sleep than normal during their pregnancy.
Among the women examined, about 13% slept for six hours or less, more than 55% slept 7 to 8 hours and about 10% slept 10 hours or more.
The reason that sleep can impact blood pressure probably owes itself to the fact that blood pressure can lower by 10 to 20%. So if you get less sleep, the average blood pressure as well as heart for the day goes up. Less sleep could also impact certain hormone levels which in turn impact the cardiovascular system.
The connection between too much sleep and high BP is probably due to insulin resistance, sleep apnea and depression.
