Bleeding during pregnancy is nothing but the bleeding that comes through the vagina during pregnancy.

With bleeding during pregnancy, you don’t need to be in fear and confusion.

On the other hand, never neglect the bleeding that occurs during pregnancy.

Always take it seriously and observe it closely for related symptoms, such as cramping.

So, it is essential for you to understand the causes of bleeding during pregnancy in order to determine the condition in advance and to consult your health care provider at right time.

Bleeding during pregnancy occurs most often during the first trimester of pregnancy and continues to have normal, successful pregnancy. It doesn’t signify health problems.

The common causes of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy are as follows.

Miscarriage is the most common cause for bleeding during pregnancy. Bleeding in the first trimester of pregnancy is a sign of miscarriage.

It is found that 15-20 % of all pregnancies lead to miscarriage. It is not that vaginal bleeding always lead to miscarriage. You have only fifty percent chances of having miscarriage with vaginal bleeding.

The other cause for bleeding during pregnancy is implantation bleeding. It is a condition where a little amount of bleeding takes place in the very early stages of pregnancy (10-14 days after fertilization).

It happens generally when the fertilized egg joins the lining of the uterus. This condition doesn’t last for longer period.

Molar pregnancy is a condition where an abnormal mass (without a baby) develops in the uterus after fertilization process. In molar pregnancy, bleeding during pregnancy is most common. However, it is a rare cause of bleeding in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Bleeding during pregnancy can also occur as a result of trauma to the vaginal wall. Infections to the cervix also cause bleeding in early stages of pregnancy.

Cervical changes also cause light bleeding after sexual intercourse or a pelvic exam. This type of bleeding during pregnancy is common. This condition generally occurs when the blood supply and blood flow to your cervix increases.

Ectopic pregnancy or tubal pregnancy is one more cause for bleeding during pregnancy. It is a condition where the embryo develops outside the uterus.

As the development of embryo is outside the uterus, it doesn’t result into a normal baby and also cause serious internal bleeding.

On the other hand, bleeding during second and third trimester of pregnancy often indicates severe health complications. The causes for bleeding at these stages of pregnancy are uterine rupture and also cause bleeding during pregnancy.

It is a dangerous cause of bleeding and occurs when there is a disruption of the surgical scar in the uterus.

Placenta previa is a condition where the placenta lies too low in the uterus and cover up the opening to the birth canal. With this condition, you may have painless vaginal bleeding during pregnancy.

Cervix problems such as cervical infection, growths on cervix or cervical incompetence cause bleeding in the second or third trimesters of pregnancy.

Consult your health care professional immediately when bleeding lasts more than a day or bleeding lasts along with pain or cramping.
