VBAC Risks – Know What to Expect

When thinking about VBAC risks, you should know that there are only few complications in case of vaginal delivery than in case of a C section which is considered to be a major surgery.

Nonetheless the women who have already gone through a C section face the risk of the rupture of the scar tissue during vaginal birth.

Information about the risks of VBAC

As you may see one of the risks is uterine rupture. Although it happens only rarely, such a uterine rupture could be life threatening for both the baby and the mother. The women who have the risk of uterine rupture should better avoid VBAC to make sure that the baby is safe during delivery.

Risks of VBAC

The risks of the delivery include the complications that could appear and as a result the woman in question may require another C section.

This happens in 20%-40% of the cases when attempting VBAC. Still there are some chances that the patient will have a normal vaginal birth.

Another one of the VBAC risks is the rupture of the scar tissue on the uterus, as it has been mentioned before. This is a rare complication, but it could turn out to be deadly.

The chances of a rupture are increased by a vertical incision, the medication used during labor and the scar tissue resulting from other surgeries.

Naturally among the risks of VBAC we can also find the risks of having an infection. The women trying VBAC and ending up having a C section are more likely to suffer from an infection. The risks of infection are lower in case of the vaginal births and in case of the planned C sections.

Risks of C sections

We have to think about not only the VBAC risks but also of the risks of just any C section. These risks include infections, urinary and genital problems, blood loss leading to blood transfusion, risks of anesthesia, blood clots, a long recovery time, problems of breathing of the baby and injuries of the baby during delivery.

Future risks

Besides thinking about the risks of VBAC you also have to think in advance if you would like to get pregnant again. If you have two C sections the added scar tissue increases the chances of placental problems during the following pregnancy. There are various kinds of problems you could be faced with.

The VBAC risks regarding the placenta include placenta accreta and placenta previa. These increase the risks for the baby and they increase the risks of you needing a hysterectomy in order to stop the bleeding. When you have to make a choice, you have to weigh the benefits and the disadvantages.

Studies

There have been numerous studies conducted regarding the risks of VBAC and these have found that the risks of complications could increase in case of the patients who have labor augmentation or induction. It is important to discuss these risks with your doctor before the beginning of the process.

The results of the researches regarding VBAC risks could be quite contradictory. Some of them say that having VBAC is safer than having a second C section and the women who have VBAC after several C sections don’t necessarily have increased chances of complications.

When it comes to the risks of VBAC, there are several things that you should discuss with your doctor, such as dystocia, genital herpes and fetal distress.

You have to think about the VBAC risks but don’t forget that in the end you are the one who has to make a choice and you will have to suffer the consequences.
