Dehydration During Pregnancy

In order to avoid dehydration during pregnancy, women should drink at least 8 glasses of water, the equivalent of 1.5 liters, per day.

This also includes the juices that you have, but remember that these could turn out to be high in calories. If you don’t like to drink plain water, you could add a bit or lemon or lime to it or flavor it with a bit of juice.

Also you could have some tea of coffee during the day, but you have to make sure not to have too much of them.

Things to avoid

Although you would like to escape dehydration while being pregnant, it is also important not to have too much caffeine in this period. According to specialists, women shouldn’t have more than 200 mg of caffeine per day.

This is the equivalent of two cups of instant coffee or two mugs of coffee. If you travel by plane during your pregnancy, during the flight it is easier to get dehydrated. This is because the air in the cabin has very little moisture.

If you go to a place that has a humid or hot climate most probably you will sweat more so you will have to increase your fluid intake.

Tips

It is a very good idea to have a bottle of water with you at all times and sip from time to time. Besides helping you to avoid getting dehydrated during pregnancy, water facilitates the transportation of nutrients to the baby.

If you have enough water, you can also avoid being affected by urinary tract infections, piles and constipation. All these are quite common during pregnancy.

You should have plenty of water even if you suffer from water retention that is also known as edema. If you have enough water, the body will retain less of it.
