When women find out that they have high risk pregnancy factorsthey usually get scared. There is no reason to do so because even if your doctor tells you that you have a high risk pregnancy that doesn’t mean that for sure you will have some problems.
The good news is that in the majority of the cases women with high risk pregnancies have a normal pregnancy and they give birth without any complications. Such a pregnancy means that because of a preexisting condition or one that you develop during pregnancy you have higher chances of a complication.
Your health care provider will tell you what kind of factors you have, but it is likely that it is one of the following: heart disease, kidney problems, high blood pressure, STDs of some kind such as HIV, cancer, diabetes, blood disorders, autoimmune diseases, or being underweight or overweight.
There are some other factors of high risk pregnancyas well such as having had problems with past pregnancies, being younger than 18 or over 35 or a history of fertility problems. As it has been mentioned before there are some problems that could develop during the pregnancy.
The high risk pregnancy factors that could appear during pregnancy include preeclampsia that manifests as high blood pressure during pregnancy affecting the kidneys, liver or brain of the mother. Gestational diabetes is another factor of this kind that is a type of diabetes developed during pregnancy. Preterm labor is another one of the factors of high risk pregnancy. It is said that you enter preterm labor if it starts before the 37th week of pregnancy.
Placenta previa could also become a factor of this kind. This means that the placenta is close to the cervix, leading to bleeding and early labor. Believe it or not it is also one of the high risk pregnancy factors if you are pregnant with multiples. When your doctor tells you that you have a high risk pregnancy you should ask him or her to explain to you why this happens. Also ask whether you should see a specialist of some kind. For example, in case you are affected by gestational diabetes it may be good to see an ob-gyn that specializes in endocrinology and pregnancy.
On the other hand, if you have heart problems there should be someone on the medical team specializing in cardiology. There are many different high risk pregnancy factors and we may say that each case is specific. This is why you should know about your case as much as possible to know how to handle it.
