Consider Your Choice When Looking into Abortion Options

When it comes to making a decision regarding abortion options you have to make sure that you know exactly what each option refers to in order to decide which one would suit you the best.

In some cases you should also consider keeping the baby.

Medical abortion as one of the abortion methods

There are several names for the same process but they all refer to ending a pregnancy through the use of medication.

There are two kinds of medications used over the time of a few days or a couple of weeks. Usually the method can only be used in case of early pregnancy, up to the 7th or 9th week.

The main point of this one of the abortion methods is to induce a miscarriage similarly to the way it would naturally work.

The medications used are mifepristone and misoprostol or methotrexate and misoprostol. Although the two combinations are quite similar, there are also some differences.

It is possible that both of the abortion options are available for you, but keep in mind that not all the doctors who offer surgical abortion also offer medical abortion.

The abortion with methotrexate takes longer to have an effect and it isn’t as efficient as mifepristone, so usually women opt for that.

Mifepristone and misoprostol

This one of the abortion methods has been developed in France. The first pill that the patients have to swallow is mifepristone and usually this takes place in the office of your doctor.

It acts through stopping the effects of progesterone that is one of the most important pregnancy hormones.

Since there is a lack of this hormone, the lining of the uterus starts to shed and so it is impossible for the pregnancy to grow.

Then the patient has to swallow the second pill a couple of days after the first one. It is also efficient if it is placed into the vagina.

You could use misoprostol in the doctor’s office or at home where it is more intimate. In case of this one of the abortion methods, the uterus is emptied through contractions and cramping. It may take only a few hours for this to happen, but it might also take longer. The effectiveness is of 92%-96%.

Methotrexate and misoprostol

When it comes to abortion options, you should know that this method appeared earlier than the other and although mifepristone is more efficient, this is still offered by some doctors. It may take the form of an injection or a pill and it acts through stopping the growth of the embryo.

The advantage of this one of the abortion methods is that it can stop the growth of the fetus even in case you are faced with an ectopic pregnancy. After you take the first medication, you have to wait for 4-7 days to take the second one. The bleeding and the cramps start about a day after you take the medication.

Surgical abortion

For sure you know that this is another one of the abortion options. It is also referred to as vacuum aspiration and it means that the doctor removes the pregnancy tissue from the uterus. First the cervix is numbed with the help of local anesthetics. Then the cervix is dilated.

It is important to dilate the cervix so that the doctor can introduce a thin tube into the uterus. Then he or she uses gentle suction to remove the tissue. In case you are in early pregnancy, the procedure takes only 5 minutes.

Now you know all about abortion options available out there.
