When to Consider Termination of Pregnancy?

The procedure of termination of pregnancy refers to the ending of the pregnancy before the fetus is able to survive on its own outside the womb.

In the majority of the cases the pregnancy is ended in the first 12 weeks, but it is also done until the 20th week. Nonetheless it is best to end it at an early stage.

Medical pregnancy termination

In case you opt for medical termination, you should know that this can be performed until the 9th week. It is done through the use of 2 kinds of medications.

The first one is known as mifepristone that is blocking progesterone and stops the pregnancy. Before the procedure you will have a physical exam to make sure that the pregnancy is less than 9 weeks.

Then the pregnancy termination is done through taking the medication orally. The other medication is known as misprostol.

The result is that the pregnancy is expelled from the uterus, just as in case of a miscarriage. The misprostol has to be taken at home. The medication needs to be placed in your vagina.

In case you aren’t comfortable with this step of the termination of pregnancy, you could have another appointment with your doctor.

After this step, the pregnancy will be ended in 6-48 hours. In order to make the pain better, you will get some prescribed painkillers.

A lot of women opt for such pregnancy termination because they can have it at home and the effectiveness is of about 95%. Nonetheless in case the procedure doesn’t bring the desired results, you will need a vacuum procedure.

Vacuum termination

This is another kind of termination of pregnancy, and it can be performed in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. In this case the cervix needs to be widened a bit. Then the doctor places a tube into the uterus. Through this the lining of the uterus and the pregnancy tissue will be sucked out.

Sometimes in case of pregnancy termination the doctor will ask you to come to the hospital the day before so that you will have laminaria placed into the cervix. Also you may have to place misprostol into the vagina. The main point of these procedures is to soften the cervix and to make the procedure safer.

During the termination of pregnancy, you will be given some medication to make the area numb or some medication to have a light sleep during the procedure. This is an outpatient procedure, so that you won’t need to spend a lot of time in hospital and you won’t have to spend the night there. Women choose this procedure because it is a fast one.

Dilation and evacuation

In case the pregnancy termination is performed after the 12th week, it is known as dilation and evacuation. The two procedures are similar, but in this case the cervix needs to be widely dilated. Just as in the previous case, the procedure is done as an outpatient procedure. This is also a safe kind of termination of pregnancy.
