What are Pregnancy Teas and are They Safe?

There are pregnancy teas that are sold as such, which are supposed to get rid of problems ranging from morning sickness to digestive problems to other discomforts. So what is pregnancy tea and is it really suitable for taking during pregnancy?

Pregnancy teas are herbal teas, rather than tea made from the traditional tea plant.

It is claimed that pregnancy teas can help pregnant women with specific problems such as easing of labor pains, helping to combat sleeplessness, even preventing hemorrhage and other child birth complications.

So are herbal or pregnancy teas safe to take? Don’t just go by the name “pregnancy tea” – it is important to actually look at the herbs and other ingredients that the herbal tea has.

The fact is that there isn’t enough research done on the subject of pregnancy teas and their safety to say with certainty what is safe and what is not.

The American pregnancy website, offers a helpful list of herbs used in pregnancy teas and their safety during pregnancy.

  • Red raspberry leaf is likely safe and may help to, control morning sickness and ease labor pain. After childbirth it could help tone the uterus and enhance milk production. There is however some disagreement about its safety during the last trimester of pregnancy.
  • Peppermint leaf is also likely safe, and may help to relieve gas and feelings of nausea.
  • Lemon balm is likely safe and could help with lowering anxiety and sleeplessness.
  • Ginger is a known antidote to morning sickness and is possibly safe.
  • For Dandelion, rose hips and chamomile there is insufficient information available so it is not possible to conclude whether they are safe or not.

Alfalfa and yellow dock may possibly be unsafe, and stinging nettles are considered to be likely unsafe.
