Is It Normal to Bleed During Pregnancy?

Is bleeding during pregnancy normal? A lot of women fear this aspect and get the scare of their life when it happens.

The bleeding during pregnancy that appears during the first trimester may not be an alarming sign and it could appear quite often.

Nonetheless the bleeding that occurs at later stages may be quite scary because they might be a sign that there is something wrong with the pregnancy.

The basics

In case you experience some bleeding, you should use a pad in order to be able to assess the quantity of blood and also to be able to see what kind of blood you are passing.

During periods like these, there shouldn’t be anything inserted into the vagina, like tampons or douches and you shouldn’t have intercourse either.

Common reasons of pregnancy bleeding in the first half of the pregnancy

About 20%-30% of all women experience some bleeding during the first half of their pregnancy. One of the causes may be implantation bleeding.

This usually appears 6-12 days after the fertilization of the egg. In every case this kind of bleeding appears differently. Some women notice spotting for a few hours.

Other women could see spotting for days, or the bleeding could be almost as heavy as a regular period. This is why in some cases women don’t think that they are pregnant.

Experiencing implantation bleeding isn’t a must; there are some women who don’t experience this kind of bleeding at all.

The spotting could also be caused by different kinds of infections of the urinary tract or the pelvic cavity. Another reason may be a simple intercourse.

This is because after sex the cervix is sensitive and tender. If this is your case you shouldn’t have intercourse until you see a doctor to avoid irritation.

Besides these causes bleeding while being pregnant could also be a sign of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or molar pregnancy so it is best to see a doctor about it.
