Can bleeding be a sign of pregnancy? There are cases in which it can be, however it is not a specific symptom.

Bleeding could also mean that you are about to have your menstrual period.

It is said that about 20% of women have some spotting when the egg gets implanted into the lining of the uterus. Naturally there are some other possible causes of spotting as well.

Implantation bleeding

This is also known as implantation spotting. In the majority of the cases it appears 6-12 days after fertilization takes place.

During implantation the egg gets attached to the lining of the uterus. At that time women can see some spotting.

Usually the color of bleeding during pregnancy varies between pink, red and brown. In the same time the amount could also vary. Only rarely this bleeding appears as a flow.

Women mostly see it is a smear or spotting. Sometimes this symptom is mistaken for the beginning of their period.

Other causes

As it has been mentioned before, there are also some other possible causes. These include the irritation of the cervix, ectopic pregnancy, cervical polyps or a miscarriage. Sometimes the spotting appears with no obvious reason. The most obvious cause of bleeding is considered to be the beginning of the period.

It is possible to observe some bleeding that is very much like a normal period, but this happens very rarely. In case you see some bleeding and you had a negative pregnancy test, it is best to see a doctor about your problem.
