Can You Bleed During Pregnancy?

So, can you bleed during pregnancy? No matter how scary it may sound, bleeding during pregnancy happens quite often and it shouldn’t be seen as an alarming sign.

If it happens in the first trimester, it could be something natural, but if it appears during the second or third trimester, it could be a worrisome symptom.

Basic considerations

If you see any kind of bleeding, make sure that you use a pad. This will make it possible for you to assess the amount of blood you are losing and this could be important information for your doctor.

When you notice bleeding, you should make sure that you don’t insert anything into the vagina.

This means that you should avoid using tampons and douches and in this period it isn’t advisable to have sex either.

In case you experience the bleeding for longer periods of time or if it gets heavier with time, you should make sure to tell your doctor about it.

Miscarriage

When thinking about bleeding and pregnancy there are many causes that you could be thinking about, one of them being a miscarriage.

Nonetheless bleeding doesn’t mean that the miscarriage is imminent. About 20-30% of women experience bleeding and only half of them actually have a miscarriage.

About 15-20% of the pregnancies end in a miscarriage and these usually occur in the first trimester. The signs of a miscarriage include vaginal bleeding, passing tissue and abdominal cramps. It is important to remember that there is no way to prevent a miscarriage.

Ectopic pregnancy

This means that the fertilized egg gets implanted outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tubes. This situation arises only once in 60 pregnancies so it is quite uncommon.

You may see that bleeding while being pregnant can be caused by many different problems, but usually there is nothing to worry about.
