Gaining Weight During Pregnancy

If you are concerned about gaining weight during pregnancy you should know that if you gain weight by having a balanced diet and getting all the required nutrients, it means that the baby is developing as he or she should.

Women should forget about eating for two. It is true that women need more calories than they did before they got pregnant. However they have to increase their calorie intake only with 100-300 calories per day.

The best thing you could do is to ask your health care provider about how much weight you should gain.

Normal weight gain

Normally women gain about 25-35 pounds during their pregnancy. If you were underweight before you got pregnant, it is possible that you will gain 28-40 pounds. Overweight women need less weight gain during pregnancy, of about 15-25 pounds.

During the first 2-4 months you are supposed to gain 2-4 pounds. In the later stages women usually gain about a pound per week.

If you are pregnant with twins, most probably you will gain more weight of 35-45 pounds. You should also think about the fact that it is possible to lose weight during pregnancy. This is usually the case of overweight women. Although this could occur naturally, women shouldn’t try to lose weight under no circumstances.

How to gain the right amount of weight

If you should gain more weight while being pregnant you should try to have six smaller meals during the day. It is also a good idea to always have some snacks at hand, like raisins, nuts, crackers, cheese, ice cream, dried fruit or yogurt.

You could also have some peanut butter, because it is rich in calories. Spread it on toast, apples, crackers, celery or bananas. Nonfat powdered milk could also offer you the results that you are looking for.
