Hives During Pregnancy

Hives is a common pregnancy ailment that affects many pregnant women. Groups of red welts appear on different parts of the body. These welts are itchy and irritating.

Hives may appear at any stage of pregnancy and will disappear on their own in about 4 weeks after the delivery. About half the women may suffer from hives during pregnancy.

Facts

Hives are generally, allergic reactions and may appear as clusters or groups. These welts can change shapes and even shift around. Hives appear on the abdomen, legs, face, arms and back.

Although it is a harmless condition that has no effect on the mother or the baby, hives needs immediate attention only if it appears in the genital area. In spite of being harmless, it is a very irritating condition as it itches severely.

Hives are caused by food allergies, other allergens, hormonal changes and stretching skin (uterus expansion). There are no medications to help control the condition, but a few easy steps can help curb the itching.

Measures to take

Avoid known allergens and observe what triggers these itchy welts. Use cold compresses to cool the area and reduce the itching. Take cool baths before going to bed, as the itching worsens during the night.

If the itching is very bad, you can ask your caregiver for histamine sprays or anti itching creams that will ease your discomfort. Apply a paste of baking soda and water to the affected areas to reduce the inflammation and itching. Do not scratch, as it will aggravate the problem.

Keep Benadryl sprays or calamine lotions handy when you go to bed. These will provide immediate relief if the itchiness increases suddenly during the night.

When using Benadryl spray observe its effects on you and the baby. If use of spray makes you sleepy or you feel that the baby’s movements have reduced, contact the doctor immediately.
